Classroom
Garret Covington is majoring in one of WIU’s top majors: law enforcement and justice administration. On top of being a student-athlete, he is also heavily involved with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee at Western Illinois, The Summit League and the NCAA, as well as the Student Body Government.
Character
Covington is no doubt the team’s leader on and off the court, leading both verbally and by example. He consistently motivates his teammates in games and lifting everyone’s spirits after contests, win or lose.
Community
Covington and the Western Illinois men’s basketball program consistently help out in the Macomb community. He has been involved with visiting schools to read to and interact with the students, helping with landscaping projects around campus, participating in programs that assist those in need, and various other opportunities the Macomb community provides.
Competition
Covington has led WIU in scoring in each of his first three seasons and has been tabbed second-team All-Summit League in each of those three seasons. He also was named the Summit League’s Newcomer of the Year following his freshman campaign. He was named the league’s Player of the Week several times throughout his first three seasons, and, as of nomination time, ranked No. 13 all-time in WIU scoring with a chance to rank first all-time in the program’s D-I era. Covington has averaged 15.9 points per game during his three seasons (14.6 as freshman, 15.5 as sophomore and 17.9 as junior) and has 210 career three-pointers.
