Classroom
Mike holds a 3.635 overall GPA as an evolutionary anthropology major. He earned a 4.0 GPA in the 2008 fall semester and has earned A+ in two graduate-level courses while at Duke. Catalino has completed the full pre-med curriculum, including getting A’s in both semesters of organic chemistry, in addition to taking six courses of Italian. In the summer of 2007, Mike took a Duke graduate course in evolutionary anthropology He has been a member of the Dean’s List four times, is a three-time Academic All-ACC honoree and a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll. A Peter Ortate Memorial Scholarship Recipient, Mike is also a member of the Italian Speakers Association and was selected for the graduation with distinction honors thesis which is given to the top students in the major.
Character
Mike is a very impressive young man, very well-rounded. He excels on both the lacrosse field, in the classroom, and in the community and is a selfless individual who is always looking at ways to make everything and everyone around him better.
Community
Catalino helps cook meals at Ronald McDonald house for families and patients of the Duke University hospital. In addition, he has participated in MLK Million, packaging thousands of meals for families in Africa, and has served as a middle school tutor. He is an active member of the Duke Students for an Ethical Durham organization and organized and oversaw the “Voice Your Choice” voter registration barbecue. Mike was selected as one of 35 upperclassmen to help implement inaugural freshmen athlete mentoring program in 2007-08 and he started the Great Upstate Lacrosse League.
Competition
Mike has played in 44 games during his career and all but one over the past two seasons. During his tenure, Duke is 35-5 over the past two seasons. A key member of second midfield line, Catalino has 20 goals and six assists for 26 points for his career. In 2008, Mike was ranked seventh on the team with 16 points on 12 goals and four assists. He helped lead Duke to ACC regular season and Tournament titles and the Blue Devils earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. Under Catalino’s guidance, the team reached a NCAA-record 18 wins. During the 2007 season, Mike played in all 20 games as Duke captured ACC regular season and tournament crowns and advanced to the NCAA title game. Catalino registered seven goals and one assist and won 25-of-58 faceoffs. In addition, he scored the game-winner in the ACC Championship game.
